At the ongoing Deaflympics in Chinese Taipei being staged from 5th to 15th September 2009, the home team outfought Ukraine in the final of the Men's Team event.
Outstanding Wen
Leading the Ukrainians by a 2-1 margin in team's play, Wen Chih-hsuan overcame a 0-2 deficit with consecutive wins against Ukraine ace Gennadii Zakladnyi in their match to clinch the gold medal for Chinese Taipei.
Even though they could not hear the cheering from the spectators on hand, members of the gold-winning squad still could feel the excitement.
Wen outplayed Ukraine's Dmytro Kokosha to win the first point for Chinese Taipei (11-8, 11-3, 11-3) before Zakladnyi answered with a 3-1 win over Yang Jung-Tsung to even the match at one point apiece.
Chinese Taipei would win its second point to reclaim the lead in the match with a 3-1 win by Kuo Yueh-Tung, setting the stage for Wen's dramatic finish.
Wen was undoubtedly the hero on the night because two of the three points for Chinese Taipei came by his outstanding play.
About the Deaflympics
Organized since 1924 by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf, the first Summer Deaflympics were held in Paris. Winter Deaflympics were added in 1949. Table tennis has been on the programme since 1957. The Summer and Winter Deaflympics are sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee, IOC.
The need for separate games for deaf athletes is not just evident in the numbers of participants. Deaf athletes are distinguished from all others in their special communication needs on the sports field, as well as in the social interaction that is an equally vital part of the games.
