The host nation’s hopes of the top prize in the First Division of the Women’s Team event at the Asian Championships in the Indian city of Lucknow disappeared in the space of just over one hour on Tuesday 17th November 2009.
They suffered a three matches to nil defeat against Thailand; the trio of Nanthana Komwong, Suthasini Sawettabut and Anisara Komwong were in no mood for charity; there was a mission and that mission was completed in a most efficient manner.
Quite simply the technically better team won the day, shorter quicker strokes, faster footwork and superior over the table were the differences.
Successes
Nanthana Komwong beat Mouma Das in three straight games, Suthasini Sawettabut followed suit by overcoming Shamini Kumaresan by the same margin whilst matters came to an end with Anisara Muangsuk recording a four games victory over Poulomi Ghatak.
Aggressive
“I knew I had to be aggressive”, said Nanthana Komwong. “I’d played Mouma before and won so I was reasonably confident; today I felt my forehand topspin was good, it won me a lot of points.”
Nanthana Komwong, experienced on the ITTF Pro Tour, gave Thailand the start they need and the least experienced member of the team immediately followed suit.
Debut
It is the first time that Suthasinee Sawettabut has played in an Asian Championships; however, she has been a regular face at ITTF Global Junior Programme events and is no stranger to the international arena.
“I think I played well today”, she said. “I was positive and I felt confident.”
Certainly she moved well and played with a high level of consistency.
Tested
Two matches to nil ahead, the impetus was with Thailand and Anisara Muangsuk, arguably the most experienced member of the team duly brought matters to an end.
However, she was tested by the powerful Poloumi Ghatak.
“I had problems with her topspin play; especially when she played from the forehand”, said Anisara Muangsuk. “Eventually I was able to win by blocking the ball better as the match progressed.”
DPR Korea Books Final Place
Success for Thailand and also for DPR Korea; they beat Malaysia by three matches to nil.
Star of the show for DPR Korea was Kim Jong; she beat both Chiu Soo Jin and Beh Lee Wei with Kim Hye Song adding the one further win with victory over Fan Xiao Jun.
The one win for Malaysia came from the voice of experience; Beh Lee Wei beat Han Hye Song in the second match of the fixture.
